| Georgia: Thousands suffering in silence: Violence against women in the ...
For reasons of personal safety the names of all women mentioned in this report who have experienced violence in the family have been changed and any case details that may make them identifiable have been altered. The only exception is the case of a woman whose husband has died. Including due to lack of available safe and affordable housing and access to independent means to support themselves, several women whose cases are mentioned in the report continue to live with their violent partner and risk reprisals if they are identified. The case examples included in this document were either obtained through interviews conducted by Amnesty International during a fact-finding visit to Georgia in April 2006 or provided by the following Georgian NGOs: Advice Centre for Women "Sakhli"(7), Anti-Violence Network of Georgia, the Centre for Protection of Constitutional Rights, the Georgian Young Lawyers Association, and Saphari(8).
Jeff Thelen's Blog
Do you have any ideas to save money? We ran a couple of stories this week talking about the tough economic times that could lie ahead. And we heard some great advice from experts and the people putting them into action. They say you need to write down a budget and stick with it. Save money and take advantage of your 401k plan as much as possible. Other advice is find hobbies that don't cost as much money (play basketball instead of buying video games) cut down on your number of stops per week at your favorite high end coffee shop and read stuff off the internet instead of subscribing to a magazine. So, do you have any ideas? Feel free to share them. You know what to do. J Respond to Jeff's blog here: Jeff, I saw the clip on "Hunters Coalition Against Earn-A-Buck" and am looking for contact info.
Ochoa runs away with Singapore victory in season debut
Competing for the first time since winning the ADT Championship in November for her eighth 2007 victory, Ochoa finished at 20-under 268 on Tanah Merah's Garden Course. The top-ranked Mexican star earned $300,000 for her 18th career LPGA Tour victory. "I took my game to a new level, so I'm going to keep trying to repeat myself," Ochoa said. "There are a lot of birdies out there, and hopefully I'll have great rounds this year." Ochoa entered the final round with an eight-shot lead, and steadily built on it through three rain delays. She passed the down time by chatting with her brother. "It was more mentally a tough day than physically. You needed to be patient and not to worry too much, and hit the ball with precision," she said. Sorenstam won the B-flight, shooting a 71 for her third straight top-four finish.
G. Chambers Williams III: Lexus hybrid saves fuel and money
Buying an expensive gasoline-electric hybrid SUV might not make a lot of sense if saving money on gasoline is the only motivation. Someone who can pay the $41,000-plus price of the Lexus RX 400h, our test vehicle, probably isn't as worried about gas prices as those driving, say, Honda Civics. But the RX 400h's fuel economy — 27 miles per gallon in the city and 24 on the highway — is a nice plus, especially considering that some of the large, truck-based SUVs do well to get 15 mpg on the highway. Toyota's reason for creating the RX 400h wasn't as much about saving money at the gas pumps as creating an SUV that might be a bit more environmentally responsible, using less gas and putting out lower levels of harmful emissions. The vehicle produces 90 percent less smog-forming tailpipe emissions than similar conventionally powered vehicles, Lexus says.
McCain's endangered pander.
Endangered Pander? McCain supports legalization of illegal immigrants, loses 5 points over the month among Hispanic Republicans in California, according to SurveyUSA. Fred Thompson blasts the legalization bill from the right and his support among Hispanics quintuples, putting him ahead of McCain (and Giuliani) among Hispanics. ... P.S.: These are Hispanic Republicans, of course. But they are not insignificant, making up 17% of "likely Republican Primary voters" in Survey USA's model. ... P.P.S.: McCain's loss (and Thompson's gain) was actually greater among Hispanics than among GOP voters generally. ... P.P.P.S.: You don't even want to see what happened among black Republicans. ... 8:52 P.M. A Poll Number WaPo Omitted: In that recent ABC-Wash Post poll, mentioned by Jonathan Weisman in this morning's Kyl-side--spinner, only 29 percent approved President Bush's handling of the immigration issue, a "career low." ...
Activists Bare Teeth Over Foreclosures
The commotion was the work of an in-your-face activist group called the East Side Organizing Project, with a paid staff then of just two, mobilized to battle Cleveland's mortgage "loan sharks." Years before the rest of the country was rocked by the fallout from aggressive lending, their neighborhoods were already home to the nation's highest concentration of foreclosures -- and they were fed up. .
