Lear wins appeal in patent suit

Lear Corp., once the largest supplier of car interiors, won an appeals-court ruling that allows it to continue to provide Car2U garage-door openers to automakers until a Johnson Controls Inc. patent-infringement lawsuit is decided.

A trial judge had barred Lear from selling the Car2U device, saying there was a good chance Johnson Controls and patent owner Chamberlain Group Inc. would win the suit. Closely held Chamberlain owns the patent and Johnson Controls is the exclusive licensee.

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit in Washington today said the judge erred in defining one of the key terms of the patent. The court threw out the order barring sales and sent the case back for further review.

Anti-racism rally draws 200 in Arlington

ARLINGTON About 200 people came to a rally today at City Hall to demand that the city make certain reparations to Silk Littlejohn and Broderick Gamble.

The group, organized by Friendship-West Baptist Church in Dallas, said the city did not do enough in December when racial slurs were painted on the couple's garage doors and when a neighbor attacked Littlejohn with a two-by-four.

City officials were not at the rally. Shortly after the December incident, Mayor Robert Cluck issued an apology on the city's behalf to Littlejohn and Gamble. Cluck released a statement after the rally, that said, in part, "We welcome those who are here for the rally today and encourage them to express their opinions and share their thoughts. Arlington is an open, fair, and progressive community that comes together and supports all its residents."

Beware dangers in using portable generators

Carbon monoxide poisoning. Electrocution. Fire.

With all the possible safety hazards that can occur if you misuse a portable generator, you have to wonder why homeowners take the risks.

"Lights being off, using candles -- it gets old quickly," says Duff Jones, owner of Ron Jones Power Equipment, a Spanaway, Wash., supplier that sold plenty of generators during the recent big storms and prolonged power outages. "It doesn't take long to get unhappy."

But you can be snug and safe with your generator, as long as you follow the rules. First, let's look at the dangers.

The gasoline-powered motor that runs a generator is an internal combustion engine, much like a miniature automobile engine. Like a car engine, the generator motor gives off carbon monoxide -- a deadly, colorless, odorless gas.

Break a gypsy curse and fall in love

Ricci is a kind of female Johnny Depp in that she volunteers for the most cynical and strange characters. We've liked her sassy, stubborn refusal to be ordinary since she played Wednesday Addams at roughly 10 years old in "The Addams Family" (1991). She reached the peak in the great, offbeat comedy "The Opposite of Sex" (1998), which has been unjustly ignored. (Rent it and laugh.) She was last seen, characteristically on the edge, as a Daisy Mae kind of backwoods girl who is chained to a radiator by Samuel L. Jackson in an effort to cure her of her sluttish ways. (Don't rent it, except as a pure curiosity.)

In "Penelope," she is, again, off-beat, but in a lonesome way. This modern fairy tale asks a good deal of suspension of disbelief from its audience: A gypsy curse was put on the Wilhern family five generations ago.

American Axle workers expect long strike

Idea of pay cut motivates pickets at American Axle Eric Morath / The Detroit News

DETROIT -- The smell of burning wood hangs over Holbrook Street, with American Axle's hulking factory flanking both sides.

On driveways and sidewalks in between, striking workers trace a path into the mounting snow as they circle the smoldering barrels for warmth.

In the middle of a pelting Michigan snowstorm Friday, strikers bundled up to withstand the elements to try and endure what many of the 3,600 union members now say could be a weeks -- or months-long strike.
